The beauty of lemons

I’ve just come back from spending 10 days in the grove in Mallorca where the orange trees are laden with juicy fruit and the air is full of the fragrant smell of blossom. During our stay we cleared the ground in a few sectors of the grove, which was essentially a large-scale weeding mission, and planted 100 new orange trees.  It was hard work but beautifully peaceful; the perfect place for contemplation under bright sunny skies.

Though the grove is mostly home to orange trees, there are a number of lemon trees and we spent some time pruning them and picking the fruit. I’m a big fan of lemons; they are a good source of vitamin C and potassium and also have natural antiseptic and antibiotic properties. So, I thought I’d share a few ways that you can introduce this nutritious fruit into your world every day.

1. Drink hot lemon in the morning to cleanse your system and aid digestion. I’ve been doing this almost every day for a few years now and it’s quick and easy to do. Simply squeeze half a lemon, add hot water and drink this first thing in the morning before your breakfast to kick-start your day.

2. Make a zingy salad dressing by combining lemon juice with extra virgin olive oil, salt and pepper. If you want to give it an extra kick, you could also add wholegrain mustard or garlic.

3. Slice half a lemon and add it to your drinking water.
